what up blog

Nowadays spending over $100 for a pair of sneakers is a pretty common occurrence. Stop into any shoe store in the mall and you can find plenty of examples of these shoes. I wanted to do a blog on something I could relate to because I’m in to shoes but I was curious to find the most expensive sneakers on the market. I thought over a hundred bucks was a lot but there is a pair of Nike shoes on the market for $5000! When I saw this article I could not believe someone would spend that kind of money. I also found shoes for $4000 and the cheapies of these uber-shoes for around $1000-$1500. Now if this isn’t a sign of the Apocalypse, I don’t know what is. Thousands of dollars for a pair of tennis shoes? It’s crazy. I know there are high profile designer shoes for women that probably cost around this much, but these are sneakers, basketball shoes, and skater shoes. I guess for these “sneakerheads” it’s worth the dough to have the rarest shoes on the planet. The $5000 pair of PS3 Nike shoes were put on a shoe only auction site, Blue Sole (I would hyperlink but the site is down right now), the PS3 shoes were created to celebrate the launch date of the game console. I found the $4000 of Nike Dunk Low Pro SP Unkles on another blog site the.[ED]ition and only FIVE pairs of them in the world. Now what makes these shoes better than the cheapo $100 pairs of shoes at the local mall? It’s the artist who is hired by Nike to design these special edition shoes. Artists like Mark Ong a.k.a SBTG or Sabotage, gained recognition by hand painting Nikes and auctioning them off. I hope that this new art form will someday be mass produced, not all by hand obviously but now it is exclusive to people with the means to spend a couple thousand dollars on shoes. Oh and those fanatic sneakerheads who wait in line for hours to get their hands on the freshest new kicks.

To be honest some of the reading went a little over my head. I think everyone can agree that it was wordy and hard to relate to at times. But I did get a few things from them, I liked how Marx and Baudrillard used religion and psychology to explain the phenomenon of consumption. I identified with Marx’s use of religion just because I grew up in the church since my Dad is a minister. The mystic quality that surrounds religion can be hard to explain. For me faith is not something you can define, it isn’t something you can grasp obviously just as why humans desire material objects past needs. I think Marx can clearly do a better job explaining this, but that connection he made to two very different subjects made me understand what he was trying to say.

It’s finally the best time of my year. Mid-August, because of school? Hell no, because on August 12th the videogame EA Sports’ Madden 2009 came out. Now I don’t play a whole lot of videogames but every year I try and get my hands on a copy of the latest Madden, a game franchise it’s 20th year. John Madden’s football videogame sells millions of copies annually and can be found almost anywhere. I even saw 7-11 promoting and selling the game. This year’s copy has the former Packer, formerly retired Brett Farve on the cover. Madden 09 is available for all major gaming platforms, meaning xbox 360, playstation 3, and nintendo Wii. The game adds new features every year, and every year the game looks more and more realistic. An interesting thing EA Sports is doing this year is releasing a Spanish language version of Madden, available September 17th. So I make my way up to Walmart Monday the 11th around 11:30 p.m. to get one of the first copies released at 12. The line looks a new Harry Potter book is about to be released, except the line consists of college guys, middle aged men and those lucky little kids who talked their dads into letting them stay up.  The game runs about $60 for xbox 360 and playstation 3 and $50 for Wii. As soon as I get home I toss the game into my 360 and don’t go to bed until about 7am the next day. Just to show you how HUGE Madden football is as a game, and also show you kind of what my night was like check out this ad for the game.
